The President of the European Association of Judges (EAJ), Sabina Matejka, took part in the EU conference European Judicial Training: Creating an Enabling Environment for DigitalJustice@2030, held on 26–27 February 2026 in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Organised by the European Commission, the conference focused on the practical implementation of the European Strategy for Judicial Training 2025–2030, published by the Commission on 20 November 2025.This strategic document outlines the key directions for the development of judicial training in Europe in the context of the digital transformation of justice, the growing role of artificial intelligence, and the strengthening of cross-border judicial cooperation.
The strategy is founded on the principle that modern justice must combine judicial independence, high standards of human rights protection, and respect for the rule of law with the effective and responsible use of digital technologies.

Its key priorities include the development of digital skills among judges and court staff, improving AI literacy, electronic case management, the handling of digital evidence, cybersecurity, personal data protection, and the implementation of modern digital tools aimed at improving access to justice.

At the same time, the document expressly emphasises that technology, including artificial intelligence, should serve as a tool supporting the administration of justice and cannot replace a judge’s independent professional judgement or personal responsibility for judicial decisions.

The strategy is of particular importance for countries seeking membership of the European Union, including Ukraine. The European Commission specifically underlines that judicial training must play a central role in Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction, as well as in preparing the country’s judicial system for integration into the European legal area.
