65th Annual Congress of the International Association of Judges (IAJ)

On September 16-21, 2023, the 65th Annual Congress of the International Association of Judges (Taiwan) was held. Olena Yevtushenko, a member of the All-Ukrainian public organization “Association of Judges of Ukraine”, judge of the Supreme Specialized Court of Ukraine for the consideration of civil and criminal cases (retired) took part in the congress.

65th Annual Congress of the International Association of Judges in Taiwan

On September 16-21, 2023, the 65th Annual Congress of the International Association of Judges (Taiwan) was held. Olena Yevtushenko, a member of the All-Ukrainian public organization “Association of Judges of Ukraine”, judge of the Supreme Specialized Court of Ukraine for the consideration of civil and criminal cases (retired) took part in the congress.

The congress program included events, meetings and seminars on justice issues and challenges facing judicial institutions around the world.

On September 17, the European Association of Judges adopted a statement on the possible prosecution of Lithuanian judges by the Russian authorities.

On September 18, the 65th annual meeting of the International Association of Judges officially began. The opening ceremony was attended by:

  • The President of Taiwan Ms. Yin-wen Tsai,
  • President of Taiwan Judges Association Jung-Li Hsu,
  • TSMC founder Morris Chang.

During the first session of the Central Council, a new member — Burkina Faso — was admitted to the association.

On September 19, three awards for the independence of the judicial system were presented:

  • To the President of the Association of Judges of Tunisia — Judge Anasu Khmedi,
  • Judges from Afghanistan — Azar Sarem,
  • National Judicial Council of Hungary, represented by President Tomasz Matusyk.

Election of the new leadership of the International Association of Judges

During the 65th General Meeting of the Central Council of the International Association of Judges in Taipei, Duro Sessa, former First Vice President of the International Association of Judges and President of the European Association of Judges, was elected as the new President of the International Judges Association by acclamation.

Former President José Igreha Matos was appointed Honorary President of the MIU.

Members of the new Presidential Committee were:

  • Walter Barone (First Vice President),
  • Allison Duncan,
  • Marcel Quassy,
  • Mikael Soberg,
  • Sabina Mateyka,
  • Roland Kempfle.

MIU Secretary General Giacomo Oberto, who has held this position since 2012, was re-elected along with three deputies:

  • Galileo D'Agostino,
  • Raffaele Gargiulo,
  • Stefano Ascettino.

On September 21, Michael Soberg was elected as the new president of the European Association of Judges. The Vice-Presidents of the EAS were Sabina Matejka and Roland Kempfle.

Important resolutions were also adopted on Tunisia, Armenia and Moldova.
